HDD SDD

So which one do you think is going to be the winner? Well here I am going to compare both of them.  The criteria which I will use are speed, price per gigabyte (PPG), power consumption, stability and noise.

1.  Speed:  The faster the better.

HDD:  The 3.5 inch HDD has an average speed of 111MB per second for reading and writing.  The speed then slows for 28% for 2.5 inch HDD.

SSD:  The fastest SSD has a transfer rate of 243MB per second for reading and 206MB per second for writing.  The SSD is two times faster than the speed of the HDD.

We have a clear winner here guys and gals.  This round goes to the SSD.

Score:  HDD 0 – SSD 1.

2.  PPG:  The FACT is that we always need more space to store our “important” files such as our endless collection of mp3s and blu-ray movies and also our “less important” files such as work files.  Which one of these two will provide us with value for money?

HDD:  Western Digital has produced a 2TB HDD and it costs around RM600.  The PPG for the HDD would be around RM0.30. WOOT!

SSD:  A Kingston SSD with a capacity of 128GB already costs RM890 and that would make the PPG around RM6.95.

So the HDD makes a comeback by giving the SSD a big blow in the face.

Score:  HDD 1 – SSD 1.

3.  Power Consumption:  As we already know, mother earth is dying but some people are still in denial about this fact.  Which one of these two will help our mother earth?

HDD:  An average HDD will use 4 watts of power for reading and writing.

SSD:  The SSD only consume 1 watt of power for reading and 2 watts of power for writing.

Low power consumption would be very helpful who are always mobile as it would help save battery life.  Another benefit is that it would also help our pockets in the long run.

Score:  HDD 1 – SSD 2.

4.  Stability:  Who will fall first?

HDD:  The HDD is not very well known for recovering from taking a fall.  Even a slight knock can also cause a failure (ask Mr HDD in my laptop here if you don’t believe me).

SSD:  The SSD utilizes flash memory.  It is more robust then the HDD thus it can recover better than the HDD.

So in terms of stability the SSD is better than the HDD.  The SSD is convenient for people who are always on the move and the HDD is better for home computers.

Score:  HDD 1 – SSD 3.

5.  Noise:  Will you shut up!

HDD:  The HDD is made out of moving parts.  The faster the HDD spins the noisier the HDD gets. The 2.5 inch HDD noise aren’t that bad and sometimes just can downright ignored meanwhile 3.5 inch HDD creates a slightly audible noise because it spins faster.

SSD:  There are no moving parts in the SSD so there are no noises coming out from the SSD.

The SSD clearly owns the HDD in this round.

Score:  HDD 1 – SSD 4.

The SSD clearly trumped the HDD with a score of 4 – 1, but looking at current trends it does not seem that way.  People are still going to buy the HDD because it is way cheaper than the SSD even though it is clear that the SSD provides more advantages than the HDD.

So let me ask you, who is the real winner?
