Is there anyone who still uses Win2K? Many still do I guess but it is sad to say that the official Microsoft support for Windows 2000 will be discontinued on the 13th of July 2010. Win2K still has a use as Firefox, Opera and the current Adobe Flash Player still can run on the nearly obsolete operating system but is it still relevant to keep on using Win2K when it is already 2010 is an entirely different matter.
Personally I haven’t touched a computer running Win2K in such a long time. If I remembered it correctly the last time a toyed with it was around 6 or 7 years ago. After XP came out, Win2K just faded from my life.
Why are there still people still using this operating system? The non-existence of WGA of course. Without WGA you can apply all the updates from Microsoft without having to go through any additional validation. To make it much more clear, people can run an illegal version of the operating system without being caught by Microsoft.
Microsoft’s decision to stop support for Win2K is a good idea. Resources spent on the old OS could be put to much more use in providing updates for the latest version of Windows. Furthermore as hardware technology advances to greater length the operating system will not be able to keep up with it and the latest softwares won’t even be able to run on them anymore.
So if that happens and it eventually will the only way to prevent from lagging in technology is to upgrade to a new operating system. If you’re not one to spend money buying OS’s then there are lots of Linux distributions on the web that are available for free. Try Ubuntu or its sibling Kubuntu.
To all Win2K users its really is time to move on. Win2K’s death is inevitable.

I had no idea that they still supported it?! I know that
I had no idea that they still supported it?! I know that I went directly from 95 to 98 to ME. Then from ME to XP, to Vista and now 7.
If I recall correctly, wasn’t Win2k buggy?
Well there are still lots of businesses that still runs Win2K, so they had to support it. Making an overhaul to an company’s IT system costs a lot and takes time. Some company’s maybe didn’t see the need to change the OS and simply just needed patches from Microsoft.
But now maybe people using the legitimate version of Win2K has decreased a lot so Microsoft does not find it feasible any more to support it.
